Cars in Action November 2011

November was a big month for us – we couldn’t let you guys down after our fantastic relaunch issue in October, so we packed the new magazine with even more exciting content. Go grab your copy now!

We headed to the Ascari racetrack in Spain for the world launch of the BMW M5 and were thrilled with the new car. It’s not as brutal as it was before but it’s faster and more fun than ever, and cleaner too. Solid on road and on the track, the M5 impressed across the board, but if you want to know more, you’ll have to buy the magazine.

We also travelled to Vienna in Austria to give the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class a go, and what a surprise that was! It blew us away with all the latest technology and it’s definitely going to fight for top spot in the segment.

Out keynote feature in November is the Art of Driving. We look at the concept of driving from every conceivable angle and whether you want to hear about it from racers, writers, instructors or armchair experts, we’ve got it. What is it about cars, and indeed ourselves, that makes driving such a pleasure? Skidding, off-roading and everything in between, racing past and present, it’s all in Cars in Action’s in-depth look into the Art of Driving.

And with that in mind, our road test could not have been more appropriate, as we gave the Porsche Cayman R a bit of a thrash, but you’ll have to read the story in the magazine to find out how much we liked it.

Of course we couldn’t get away without any shootouts and the November issue has two stunning ones. First up, the new-engined Alfa Romeo 159 takes on the facelifted Honda Accord and the all-new Suzuki Kizashi, with city hatches, including the Kia Picanto, Nissan Micra, Suzuki Alto and Toyota Aygo, fight it out for top spot.

The latest news, motorsport and the usual raft of quick tests and long-term updates mean the November issue of Cars in Action is packed with action from cover to cover. Only question is, why are you still reading this? Go get your copy now!

Cars in Action October 2011

You’ll know by know that we’ve reinivigorated Cars in Action, adding the country’s best and most respected motoring journalists to our line up and combining it with a fresh new style and a fair dose of excitement. Now the wait is over and you can get your hands on the October digital edition of the relaunched Cars in Action before it hits shelves next Wednesday.

It’s packed with all the excitement we promised, from a special on the Frankfurt Motor Show to a preview of the upcoming Johannesburg International Motor Show as well as a unique, in-depth insight into the world of car design, both past and present. That article was penned by the newest edition to the team, South Africa’s most decorated motoring writer, Egmont Sippel, so you won’t want to miss it!

That’s not all – Michele Lupini headed to the UK to get behind the wheel of Noble’s mad M600, which lit up our test equipment with a a run at 330km/h. 0-100km/h was just as impressive, but you’ll have to get the digital edition to see what else we got up to with the M600.

John Bentley took to the Portuguese pavé in Kia’s latest offering, the all-new Rio, and was mighty impressed with the product, so you’ll want to check that one out too. And speaking of that Rio, in Cars in Action October you can subscribe and win the impressive Rio.

Of course the magazine is still packed with everything good Cars in Action has become renowned for, not least of which are our shootout tests. This month’s shootout sees the Mercedes-Benz C350 face off against Chevrolet’s Lumina SSV and our new long-termer, a BMW 335i.

On the testing front we got hold of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé and wrung its neck, so if you’re keen to see just what kind of a driver’s machine this thing is, that test is well worth a read.

Our fast impressions comprise the new Audi A6, the Volvo C30 diesel, the Chevrolet Orlando and the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso, while a long-term Suzuki Kizashi has joined the Honda CR-Z in our fleets as we bid a sad farewell to the diesel Citroën C5 that’s served us admirably.

Motorsport coverage, as always, is out of the top draw, and we’ve even enlarged our Formula One section so that you can dive even deeper into the opinions of the best F1 gurus in the business.

We’ve got it all and this is the first opportunity for you to feast on the relaunch issue of Cars in Action, which you won’t want to pass up. The future is here, ladies and gents, so go grab your copy of it now!

Bakkie & Truck October 2011

The October issue of Bakkie & Truck magazine has plenty to satisfy your needs for both working-class heroes and off-road adventurers.

For starters we have an exclusive first test of the new Toyota Hilux. We take a detailed look at the entire Hilux range so you will be able to see exactly which one of the many models on offer is best suited to your needs. Then we take the new two-litre single-cab Hilux to and put it to the test. But were we impressed? You’ll just have to pick up your copy to find out.

If you’re keen for something a little different, we also got our hands on the new Volkswagen Amarok Single Cab, which is a bakkie keen to take a piece of the Hilux’s workhorse pie. And we reckon it stands a good chance.

On top of that, we put two Chinese cheapies up against each other to find out who is the top dog in the budget bakkie segment. Both the CMG Fudi and the Futon Thunder put up a brave fight but in the end there can be only one.

Our load test this issue is also Chinese and, while it’s affordable, it’s far from cheap. Can the GWM Steed 5 really handle the heat when it heads into battle with established rivials like the Hilux, Ranger or KB? This is one you won’t want to miss!

In the SUV section of the magazine we bring you our story from the international launch of the Rand Rover Evoque, held in Wales. Michele Lupini took the trip over there and was mightily impressed with the versatility offered by the baby Range Rover.

But that’s not all; we pitted three hardcore off-road vehicles against each other, namely the Land Rover Defender, the Mercedes-Benz G300 and the Toyota Land Cruiser 60th Anniversary Edition. So if you’re looking for a true off-road vehicle that can handle anything, you better not miss this test.

There’s still more; we also try out the Chevrolet Capitva and the new GWM H5 SUV, plus let’s not forget the truck news where we get behind the wheel of the new JMC Carrying truck and also bring you a full test of the Mercedes-Benz Axor 3340S/33.

Watch out for it on shelf, it’s well worth a read!

Cars in Action September 2011

With the September issue of Cars in Action, we focus on the environment once again. In this year’s Green Issue we have a major scoop in the form of the very first local drive of the Toyota Auris Hybrid, which brings the Prius’ legendary eco friendliness to the mainstream. It’s decent to drive, too, so you won’t want to miss it!

And speaking of the Prius, we decided to pit it against the Honda Insight to see who came out tops. Both cars were amongst the ‘original’ modern hybrids and, even though the two systems are very different, it’s interesting to see how things have progressed since the ‘90s and where hybrids are taking us today.

For something a little less mainstream but arguably even more exciting, we also delved into the world of Eve, a South African electric car innovation that could revolutionise the way personal mobility works. Not only is the electric car itself impressive, but so is the way Eve’s creators want to lease the vehicle as and when necessary – futurists, this one’s for you!

And if you’re one of the many people out there who think that the greening of the motorcar is set to ruin everyone’s fun, you’ll definitely want to have a look at the feature we have on electric racing in our Green Edition. Sure, it might sound a little different, but with performance equal to Formula 3 cars, it’s no less exciting.

And on the topic of excitement, there’s stacks more in the Green Edition of Cars in Action. We tested Porsche’s 911 Carrera GTS, adding a nice twist by throwing a 1984 911 Carrera into the mix, drove Range Rover’s new Evoque in Wales, Volkswagen’s new Beetle in Berlin, challenged ourselves to get a 520d to Durban and back on a tank and got up close and personal with Porsche’s new CEO, Matthias Müller. There’s an affordable sportscar shootout too where the new Volkswagen Scirocco takes on the RenaultSport Mégane Cup and the Peugeot RCZ, which is definitely worth a read.

Keen for more on South Africa’s cleanest and dirtiest cars, BMW’s super-clean new ‘i’ sub-brand and plenty more, plus our usual fix of news, reviews and racing action? Then check out Cars in Action September, on shelf now!

Cars in Action August 2011

INTERCONTINENTAL COMBAT
The August issue of Cars in Action is packed with hot metal. We kick things off with a trip to the heartland of German luxury to take a cheeky drive in Jaguar’s all-new XF. It’s sleek and sexy for sure, but is it a pretender or a contender? You’ll have to check out the Digital Edition to find out!

We also got behind the wheel of McLaren’s new ‘F1’, the MP4-12C, in the UK. It’s got stacks of gadgetry and it’s incredibly quick, but it has previously been slated for being uninvolving. However, we were pretty impressed with the new Macca (it even surprised our resident Tifosi), so have a look at the August issue to look deeper.

As if that wasn’t enough, we returned to South Africa the next day to take a drive in the McLaren’s biggest rival, the newly launch Ferrari 458 Italia. Still not satisfied? Well we’ve got intercontinental combat between the pages of Cars in Action August as we compare the two of them head to head, so you won’t want miss it!

While in the UK we also had a man on the ground at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. We were spoiled and treated like a boy in a candy shop, with Goodwood boasting not only the latest sheet metal, but classic cars too and everything from Formula One cars to WRC ones. It’s all inside Cars in Action August.

There’s a bumber, 13-car shootout inside too, where we decide what the best car on a budget is in our Affordable car of the Year shootout. Should you go A-segment, sub-B or even C? Brand new or only revised? How about Chinese? Check it out to find the answer for yourself!

On top of all that, we sat down with the former Stig, Ben Collins, to get to know the man behind the mask a little better. Want to know what he’s like? You know where to go.

Of course there’s the usual fix of news from all over the world as well as our own shores, motorsport coverage and comprehensive Formula One comment. It’s a great read, so go dive into the Digital Edition of Cars in Action August now!

Bakkie & Truck August 2011

AMAROK SINGLE CAB

We introduce VW’s all-new single-cab Amarok, discover the best panel van & three big SUVs fight it out

In the August issue of Bakkie & Truck magazine we’ve got a wide variety of working, off-road and leisure vehicles for you to feast your eyes on.

We kick things off by pitiing the Citroën Berlingo, the Peugeot Partner and the Volkswagen Caddy against one another during our recent office move. It’s a test with a twist, too, as each van is a powered by a totally different engine – a 1.6 petrol, a 1.6 diesel or a bigger, two-litre oil burner – which is best for you? Grab the magazine to find out!

We also put a tough Chinese offering through the gauntlet with out load test. JMC’s BD 2.8-litre 4x4 bakkie is clearly built for the farm and in Bakkie & Truck August you can see how it fared with 500kg on its back.

The big news on the bakkie scene is the introduction of Volkswagen’s new Amarok Single Cab. While the Double Cab has been doing fairly well VW wants to up the ante with the single-cab Amarok. This is no easy task, rewriting the rulebook for what is arguably South Africa’s national vehicle, so you won’t want to miss that read.

There’s also our newly revamped SUV insert, formerly known as Ute. Inside SUV, you’ll find our big off-roader shootout where we put the Audi Q7, the Land Rover Discovery and the Nissan Pathfinder to the test. Of course, if you want to get really rough and tumble, you’d consider buying a Defender – we took one through the Namibian bush and it impressed across the board.

Of course trucks haven’t been neglected either and our Truck insert features military might from Mercedes, as well as a virtual test of the Hino 700.

Of course there’s the usual fix of news from the world of bakkies, SUVs and trucks, plus plenty more for you to dig into!

Cars in Action July 2011

SHEIK IT!
We pit four luxury limos against each other, take a look at the Ferrari FF and Lexus LFA and more

The July Digital Edition of Cars in Action is available now and it’s packed with excitement from every corner of the market.

To kick things off, we’ve got an oil-burning limo battle where Jaguar’s new XJ diesel fights for its place amongst the perennial favourites, the BMW 730d and the Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec, while the wildcard A8 4.2 TDI joined the pack too. Can the Jag overhaul the 7 or the S, or will the A8 spark a surprise – it’s a close fight, that’s for sure!

Sticking with the limo theme, we also took a trip to Austria to drive the new Porsche Panamera Hybrid. This super saloon is more thrilling than just about any hybrid out there – it’s even got a nifty trick to make efficient driving far more fun.

Still want more? How about a Ferrari that’s ready for anything? We delve into the go-anywhere Ferrari, the four-wheel-drive four-seater FF to see just how spectacular it really is. You can also check out the Formula One-sounding Lexus LFA in the new Cars in Action, because with only three of these R5-million supercars in South Africa, you’re unlikely to be one of the lucky few to do so in real life.

On the other end of the scale we cause trouble with two school-yard roughians, namely the new Volkswagen Polo GTI and the ever-popular RenaultSport Clio. Will the new guy topple the popular kid? You’ll have to read it to find out!

A stupidly quick SUV also finds its way into the pages of the July issue in the form of the Subaru Forester S-Edition, while we’ve got a green shootout to decides whether a hybrid is better than today’s clever diesels.

And of course you won’t be left without your usual fill of car news and reviews and motorsport reports from around South Africa and the world. So log in to the Digital Edition now to get your fill.

Bakkie & Truck June 2011

THE EXTRA MILE AND A HALF
The June issue of Bakkie & Truck magazine is on shelf and there's plenty of action inside.

Toyotas long-awaited Xtra Cab bakkie takes on three of its major rivals in the form of the Isuzu KB300 Extended Cab, the Nissan Navara 2.5dCi King Cab and the Mitsubishi Triton 3.2 DI-DC Club Cab. This battle of the cab-and-a-halfs is definitely worth a look in its one of the closest bakkie shootouts weve ever had!

We also loaded up 500kg on the back of the big, brawny Nissan Navara V9X and put it to the test, while the new Hyundai H100 proved itself a willing worker in our quick test.

June also has a city-slicking soft-roader shootout where we pit the new Land Rover Freelander and the new Nissan X-Trail with the Audi Q5. Three very different SUVs with three very different purposes made for an interesting result.

On top of that, we went dune driving in Namibia with Mercedes-Benzs latest G-Class and even travelled to the UK to check out the latest news and technology from Land Rover.

Cars in Action May 2011

PERANA!

We are first to drive South Africa's own supercar

Every now and again one needs to do something special. So with the double whammy of John Bentley's arrival as editor and our 14th birthday to celebrate, Cars in Action went out on a limb to do something really different and what we came up with is sure to warm the cockles of any South African car enthusiast's heart!

As you will see from the image, you may initially wonder what the car on the cover is. There are very few pictures of it and the angle at which we have it on the cover is probably one you have never seen before - that's the Perana - the PE-developed Zagato-penned SA-built supercar that stunned the world at Geneva last year.

Cars in Action is the first media anywhere in the world to drive the thing - so you really have something to look forward to this issue. And not only did our man Bentley pedal Perana, but he also spent the afternoon with the man behind it, Jimmy Price as he explored PE's mini-Maranello, while Michele Lupini went to Milano to find out more on how Zagato fitted into he picture - from the horse's mouth.

Mr. Bentley certainly kept himself busy in his first month - considering how a used Bentley (what else!) shapes up against Merc's CL500 and delving into Mercedes' glorious 125 years of motoring history. Elsewhere the Audi R8 Spyder heads up our test schedule that this month that includes a shootout between the junior Giulietta against Citroën's C4, Golf and the Hyundai i30, while Mr. Lupini reports back on why it took him two weeks to get to Zagato driving Fiat's amazing little 500C TwinAir through Italy.

We have all the regular news, views and interviews too, let alone all the latest from the racetrack topped of by all the WesBank SuperSeries action. Watch for the Digital Edition in a day or two and the magazine on shelf 20 April - just in time for a really cool extended Easter read...

Go get it!

Cars in Action November 2010

ALL POWER & PRICE
Cars in Action's November 2010 edition is packed with action from across the spectrum, the press-stopping aspect covered most finely by our track test of the wild Ford Focus RS. Darting around Kyalami in just 2m02, and from zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, it certainly impressed in the numbers department, but as usual our road test delves much deeper than that.

November also packs a comprehensive economy car special, the highlight of which is our Affordable car of the year shootout that pits ten sub-R120 000 cars against each other to determine which is the very best affordable car on offer today.

The economy special also takes in in-depth look at the success stories of this years Total Economy Run and, for those that like their economy in a more comfortable package, we feature a comparison test between the VW Jetta 1.4 TSI and Toyota Corolla 2.0.

Its been an exciting month on the international front and after travelling to the recent Paris Motor Show, we bring you a full show report while also highlighting some exciting British unveilings at the show.

Cars in Action October 2010

OPEN CARS IN ACTION
It’s that most inspiring time of year when most of us start coming out of hibernation to enjoy the warmer weather that spring has to offer as that countdown to the fun season begins. What better way to enjoy all this than by taking a relaxed drive into the country in an open-topped vehicle?

That’s why the October issue of Cars in Action is packed with such vehicles, our lead comparison test kick-starting the proceedings with a high-peformance roadster bang as the new 250kW BMW Z4 sDrive35is takes on a more affordable alternative in the form of Nissan’s 370Z Roadster.

Real world budgets are considered too, so we assembled three convertibles from the affordable end of the scale. Here we see the Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.8T facing up to the BMW 120i Convertible and Peugeot 308 CC

The excitement continues with an in-depth look at the new Audi R8 Spyder and a total of eight road tests, including the BMW 335i Convertible and Volvo C70. If you still prefer a fixed roof, however, our first track drive of the Ford Focus RS is sure to inspire you.

We’ve increased our page count to bring you more action than ever, while still packing all the regular favourites like news, columns, Demons & Angels with full data, classic car features as well as local and international motorsport.

Bakkie & Truck Action October 2010

CHINESE INQUISITION
The October issue of Bakkie & Truck magazine is a full-on Chinese inquisition and with a glut of Chinese manufacturers currently entering or re-entering our market, we chose the perfect moment to put these highly affordable options under the spotlight.

The inquisition starts off with an overview and analysis on the state of Chinese vehicles in South Africa, before getting tangible with a comparison test that pits the all-new GWM Steed 2.2 MPi against two workhorse rivals from JMC and Gonow.

This is followed by in-depth features on Chana (including a look at some exciting products on the way), as well as Gonow and JMC.

Last issue we brought you the first of our Ute supplements, which focus specifically on the leisure vehicle market, and for this issue we’ve brought you a shootout between the Hyundai iX35 and three of its rivals, as well as road tests on the Land Rover Discovery TDV6 and VW Caravelle BiTDI

This issue also goes big on real trucks, with features on the International Drivers League, new MAN TGS-WW, Isuzu FX range and Trailer King’s exciting plans, as well as a virtual road test of the Scania R420 LA.

Cars in Action September 2010

GREEN (MEAN) EDITION
Technically, the September 2010 issue of Cars in Action is our annual Green Edition that focuses on the economical side of motoring, but given the level of motoring enthusiasm inherent in ourselves and our readers, we’ve decided to focus more on the exciting side of ecological.

To that end, a highlight feature is our first spin in the stylish and squeaky-clean Honda CR-Z, which is officially the first hybrid sports car to reach South African shores. We then delve into a glut of in-depth features, showing how carmakers like Porsche, BMW and many others are enhancing efficiency and performance at the same time.

The green theme continues more intensively with a comparison test, with real-world fuel consumption figures, comparing a diesel, petrol and hybrid from Toyota’s stable, while our columns sum up our wishes for a greener future and uncover the foibles of the proposed emissions tax that will be slapping our wrists soon.

We’ve even taken a trip down memory lane in our classic section as we reveal that the electric car concept is certainly nothing new.

Our road test agenda kicks off with a bang as we put the incredible Mercedes-Benz SLS through its paces, while our fast impressions put two frugal diesel cars, the BMW X1 23d and Merc C220 CDi to the test.

A certain September highlight too, is the reintroduction of our comprehensive Demons & Angels buyer’s guide, complete with the full data on each model as some of our readers have missed lately.

Cars in Action August 2010

As you’d expect, we’ve also brought some exciting cars together for a comparison test, and here we see if the new Audi S5 Cabriolet can match up to the revised BMW 335i Convertible and Mercedes-Benz E350 Cabriolet. We’ve also strapped our test equipment to the Nissan 370Z for a full test on track and road.

Another certain September highlight is our in-depth preview of the Mercedes-Benz SLS that’s due to hit our shores shortly, while we also take a spin in the latest Ferrari California. As always, you can also look forward to your regular favourites like Fast Impressions, Demons & Angels, Best Engine, our classic car pages and latest F1 commentary and motorsport news.

Bakkie & Truck Action August 2010

THE BOLD & THE BRAWNY
Nissan has put in a strong bid to lead the double cab power struggle with its new 140kW turbodiesel Navara and, naturally, we pit it against two of its closest rivals in the form of Ford’s wildly-kitted Ranger WildTrak and Toyota’s Hilux Legend 40.

However, this revised Navara is just the beginning – with a 170kW V6 turbodiesel set to hit our shores later this year – and we’ve got all the low-down on this new engine in our in-depth preview.

Other bakkie highlights include a loaded road test of the new 132kW VW T5 double cab and a road test of the insane 400kW LupiniPower Chev SuperUte.

The August issue also marks the introduction of a new title integrated into the pages of Bakkie & Truck. Ute magazine is all about leisure vehicles and the first issue puts epitomises the modern SUV.

To this end, we compare the sophisticated new Hyundai iX35 against the Nissan Qashqai and Subaru Forester, and also bring you the latest SUV news and road tests.

August doesn’t compromise on your regular favourites though, including all the latest bakkie and truck news and a virtual truck test featuring the MAN TGA.

Cars in Action July 2010

POWER EDITION 2010
Small engines making big power – that’s the way of the future and it’s something we celebrate with great vigour in the July issue of Cars in Action.

The three pocket rockets we’ve assembled for our lead shootout epitomise this. Can the new Alfa Romeo Mito with MultiAir technology beat the Citroën DS3 and Mini Cooper S? No easy feat..

If that trio is too miniscule for your requirements, we also visit the premium saloon segment, where the new BMW 535i, with its V8-like punch, takes on the Mercedes E350 and Audi A6 3.0T.

Also punching well above its cubic capacity is the Audi TT RS that we’ve subjected to the full road test treatment, along with the affordable new Kia Koup.

Not exactly a small engine, but absolutely brutal in the power stakes, we take Lupini’s 400kW Chev SuperUte for a 2000km spin.

Other highlights include a drive in the new Nissan 370Z Roadster, Subaru Legacy GT fast impression and some future performers to drool over, including the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG and, Porsche 911 GT2.

Rounding it all off are all the regular Cars in Action favourites, including our classic car supplement, F1 analysis and the latest motorsport news.

Cars in Action June 2010

CARS IN ACTION SPEED SPECIAL 2010
If you’re not completely up to speed on the world of exceptionally fast cars, the June issue of Cars in Action will get you there at, excuse the pun, one heck of a velocity.

Witness our fastest road test ever as the Porsche 911 Turbo breaks the record for our quickest acceleration times ever, and there’s far more to this super machine too, while we also bring you all the relevant facts on the fastest Ferrari ever.

Comparison tests are ingrained in our culture at Cars in Action and this month’s lead shootout pits two seemingly unlikely rivals in the form of the Audi TT RS and Lotus Evora against each other and in the end you’ll be surprised by how each of the pair actually acts out of character.

There’s more speed where that came from, with a track test featuring the Lexus IS-F and an in-depth feature covering the BMW M range and a comprehensive preview of the forthcoming Audi RS 5.

Not forgetting petrol heads seeking excitement on a budget, we’ve also driven the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulietta on the Mille Miglia route in Italy and compiled a nostalgic report covering the historic event, which ties in perfectly with the introduction of Classic Cars in Action, now a regular supplement in the magazine.

Bakkie & Truck Action June 2010

ACCESIBLY ACCESSORISED
The June 2010 issue of Bakkie & Truck shifts the spotlight onto two limited edition double cab bakkies loaded with accessories for the buyer seeking something a little different from the norm. Watch the Hilux Legend 40 and Mazda BT-50 Edge go head to head.

Next we shift to the opposite end of the scale, where there’s been plenty of activity in the panel van sector of late. We line up the new VW T5 panel van against its natural rivals, the Peugeot Expert and Toyota Quantum.

We also take a closer look at the new VW T5 range of bakkies, panel vans and buses, which we drove on its recent launch in the Eastern Cape, before taking an in-depth look at the VW Caddy bus and van range

Back to bakkies, we then take a closer peek at the introduction of the Chinese JMC bakkie range to South Africa and the rebadging of the Opel Corsa Ute as a Chevrolet, and we load test the Isuzu KB 250 4x4 and road test the Daihatsu Gran Max.

Cars in Action April 2010

HATCH SPECIAL
The April/May 2010 edition of Cars in Action celebrates the beehive of activity that has been the hatchback market of late, while the magazine also celebrates its 13th birthday with a new look, as you’ll see in our stylish new logo and fonts.

As we’ve eluded to in the past, an exciting new upmarket hatchback genre is forming in the luxury car sector and with the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 5 Series GT and Porsche Panamera being recent arrivals, we bring them together for a close and critical look at these fascinating new ‘cross breeds’.

The excitement is also flaming up at the affordable end of the hatchback game, where we brought the new VW Polo and Citroën C3 to the Ford Fiesta for the ultimate compact hatch shootout. Only one can win..

There’s plenty more where that came from – we’ve also driven the VW Polo Vivo, and compiled in-depth features on newcomers like the Citroën C3, Toyota Auris X and Volvo C30, as well as the forthcoming Ford Figo, which will rival the Polo Vivo.

On the road testing front, look out for track tests of the BMW X5 M and Mazda MX-5 and fast impressions on the Renault Mégane dCi and Citroën C3 Picasso, while as always the back end features the latest excitement and gossip from the motorsport world.

Bakkie & Truck Action April 2010

ADVANTAGE AMAROK
The April 2010 Bakkie & Truck Action magazine covers both ends of the spectrum. Considering a luxury bakkie for yourself? We travelled to Argentina to drive Volkswagen’s all-new Amarok, a rugged yet refined bakkie that’s set to give Navara and Hilux a very hard time when it’s launched later this year. Get the low-down in our four-page preview and driving impression.

Once you’re sitting comfy in your Amarok, you might want to renew your company’s workhorse fleet and to this end you’ll surely appreciate our comparative load test between two budget-beating bakkies: The cut-price GWM Workhorse and nifty little Daihatsu Gran Max. With 500kg loaded on the back of each, we test them under the rigorous load conditions they were designed for.

We’ve also catered well for the SUV buyer, with a shootout between the new Ford Everest and the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero sport, while in other sections we preview the next VW Touareg and test the new Toyota Prado and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

This issue also treats you to a three-page load test of our 2010 Best Bakkie winner, the Nissan Navara King Cab while the flip-over secion of the magazine also reveals plenty of action from the trucking world, including a virtual road test of the Mercedes-Benz Axor 3340.

Cars in Action March 2010

BIG Cars in Action
We’re going big with the March issue – literally! This latest instalment to our series of themed issues takes a look at the changing face of the large luxury cars, with a lead comparison test pitting the new Porsche Panamera Turbo against its hyper-limo rivals, these being the BMW 760Li, Merc S 600 L and Maserati Quattroporte GTS Sport.

Too big for you? We also travelled to Portugal to drive the all-new BMW 5 Series, which is due in May, while back on home soil we got hold of its smaller 330d sibling to see if it, and the Merc C320 CDI, can still stand tall against a sumptuous new turbodiesel rival from Citroën, in the form of the C5 3.0 HDi.

If you’re after a big saloon with gut-wrenching power, be sure to read our full track test of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG. The Audi R8 V10 also gets full test treatment while our fast impressions for the month include the Lexus IS250C, Toyota Verso 1.6 and a final goodbye road test of the Citi Golf MK1.

Your regular CiA favourites are also in place, including a full Detroit Motor Show report in Fast News and a host of season previews in our motorsport section. What’s more, our Demons & Angels new car buyer’s guide has been remodelled, now more concise but punchy as ever.

Cars in Action January 2010

POWER EDITION 2010
It’s that most exciting time of year again, where we kick off the holidays with a blast by reuniting all our favourite performance cars of the past year for one final blast at Kyalami.

This year’s Performance car of the year contest covers as wide a spectrum as ever, with everything from the Porsche GT2, Audi R8 V10 and Nissan GT-R supercars right down to the affordable Opel Corsa Sport competing for honours, along with a glut of hot hatches and super saloons that play the middle ground. 13 cars in total, but only one wins.

Another tradition we’ve followed with delight was giving the full test treatment to two motorsport champions of 2009 in the form of Jayde Kruger’s Formula Volkswagen and Evan Hutchison’s Off-Road Revo. Back to reality, we’ve also road tested the Audi A5 Cabrio, VW CC and Peugeot 308 CC.

Other highlights include the scoop on Porsche’s future model range in Fast Forward, a feature on the new Lotus Evora that’s coming to South Africa in January and all the regular motoring and motorsport news, including season wrap-ups on all the prominent local and international motorsport formulae.

Bakkie & Truck Action January 2010

BEST BAKKIE 2010
It’s not easy being a hard-working bakkie in this day and age and the bakkies’ plight gets even harder at the end of each year as we assemble all the new arrivals of the year for our Best Bakkie contest.

Each bakkie gets assessed on its own merit within its own niche and this year’s diverse field covers everything from the new Ford Ranger DC to the Nissan Navara King Cab and right down to Daihatsu’s new Gran Max workhorse and three half-tonne lightweights.

The new Nissan NP200 diesel had an equally hard task this issue, being laden with a 500kg payload for our three-page road test further on. Other bakkie highlights include coverage of the new Volkswagen Amarok, due in SA late in 2010, and a road test of the Toyota Hilux 2.5 D-4D Raised Body.

SUV fans also have a feast lined up, with a comparison test pitting the new Ford Everest against the trusty Toyota Fortuner and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Our road test line-up also puts the Mercedes-Benz GL and Nissan Murano under the spotlight. Then flip over to Truck Action and find all the latest trucking news and a virtual test of the Hino 300.

Cars in Action November 2009

THE CARS IN ACTION HOT HATCH SPECIAL
We have prepared a hot hatch feast for you this issue, from the traditional to the future...

The December issue of Cars in Action magazine on sale now celebrates the hot hatchback by tackling all angles of the segment, and most excitingly, its evolution into the very premium end of the spectrum.

To this end, we were most delighted to drive the new Porsche Panamera flat out in Dubai and you can read about it in our four page driving impression, which kicks off the hot hatch special after a quick look at the evolution of the genre and how it’s spawning new entrants like the Aston Martin Rapide and BMW 5-Series GT.

From here we get back to business with the more conventional hot hatch by seeing how the latest hot hatch entrant, the Mazda3 MPS, stands up to the latest evolution of the iconic hot hatch – the VW Golf GTI – and throw in a Ford Focus ST for good measure. Before you get to that, however, you’ll also read about the next VW Golf GTI in fast forward.

The hot hatch game is also evolving downwards and we celebrate this aspect too, with a shootout between the latest Renault Clio RS and Opel Corsa OPC, while the most affordable end of the segment also gets a look in with a road test of the Renault Twingo RS.

The test agenda also includes a full test of the Alfa Romeo Mito and fast impressions of the Maserati GT A and a modified VW Scirocco. We’ve also thrown in a sedan shootout, in which the new Kia Cerato tackles the Chev Cruze and Toyota Corolla, while all your favourite aspects of Cars in Action, including the latest motoring and motorsport news is also in place.

Bakkie & Truck Action November 2009

WERK MAAR LEKKER!
Peek beneath the skin of a traditional bakkie and its ladder frame construction and leaf-sprung rear suspension might make it seem outdated by car standards, but that’s for a very good reason. These bakkies are made to withstand the toughest conditions while carrying a full load in its rear container. In the December issue of Bakkie & Truck Action, we celebrate the working bakkie.

Our line-up kicks off with a comparison test between the 2.5-litre turbodiesel, raised suspension, single cab versions of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Nissan NP300. While offering the loading capacity of a workhorse bakkie, these derivatives bring extra off-road ability and comfort to the equation. But which one is best?

This edition also marks the introduction of load testing to our magazine and the first victim is the latest Ford Ranger 3.0 TDCi double cab 4x4. After testing the vehicle with a 500kg load on the back, we’ve compiled an in-depth, three-page road test of this Ford bakkie. At the other end of the scale, we also take a look at the new Daihatsu Gran Max cab-over bakkie.

The December issue also packs in the latest bakkie and SUV news, three road tests and our regular trucking section on the back, which includes a virtual road test of the latest Mercedes-Benz Actros.

Cars in Action October 2009

SUPERCARS IN ACTION
Cars in Action October hits the track flying with a return to the kind of cars we all fantasise about, and boy do we have some exhilarating metal to report on!

Let’s start with a supercar shootout that pits the new Nissan GT-R against the Audi R8 V10 and Aston Martin V12 Vantage. However, no need to kick yourself too hard if your needs and budget fall into the real world category as we’ve also pitted the stunning new Audi S4 against the BMW 335i on track and road.

Talking track tests, we’ve also attained two of the most surprising track results ever, which you’ll read about in our full road tests of the Nissan GT-R and BMW X6 xDrive50i.

It’s also been a crazy month on the new model front, in which we’ve packed together in a full Frankfurt Motor Show report, while also covering the local turf with new model insights on the Porsche Panamera, RenaultSport Clio, Kia Cerato and Fiat Linea. Meanwhile, ‘Fast Forward’ sneaks a peek at the radical new Chevrolet Corvette that GM is working on.

Furthermore, October also introduces our first ever coast-and-reef test programme featuring the Toyota Prius, Mazda3, Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus. As is customary, the cherry on the cake is our regular columns, long-termers, SA’s best new car guide and a healthy whack of the latest gossip from the motorsport world.

Bakkie & Truck Action October 2009

CAB-AND-A-HALF KINGS
The last time Nissan offered a King Cab, it was back in the ‘eighties and it had the market to itself. Now the King Cab is back – in Navara guise – but it has three formidable rivals to face, including the new facelifted Ford Ranger. As you’d expect, we throw all four into the fighting ring.

At the lower end of the bakkie market, Fiat has just introduced a revised Strada now imported from Brazil and powered by a 1.4-litre engine. To keep it honest, we round up its workhorse rivals from Ford, Opel and Nissan.

Keeping our focus on the Brazilian influence, our news section lifts the lid on the next generation Opel Corsa Utility, which incidentally is not even an Opel but rather wears a Chevrolet bowtie. It’s based on an all new range developed in South America.

Other highlights include an Isuzu adventure in Damaraland, a look at the new Ford Ranger, a road test on the Nissan NP200 1.6 16V with figures attained both at reef altitude and sea level and, of course, the latest from the trucking industry, including a road test of the Scania R500.

Cars in Action September 2009

THE GREEN EDITION
September’s issue of Cars in Action is all about ecological responsibility in the realm of motoring, and it’s less compromising than you think. We prove this to you by assembling five cars that offer the most bang for your carbon footprint: each capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in eight seconds or less and emitting less than 175g/km when driven with optimal economy in mind.

There is plenty of excitement before you get to that section, however, with a full preview of the next BMW 5-Series, a glance at Nissan’s new electric car called the Leaf and an investigation into how South Africa’s poor fuel quality is hindering the technological advances that carmakers are making.

Being the Green Edition, we also take an in-depth look two new ‘green’ products in the form of Toyota’s Prius and the Lexus RX 450h. We also explore BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies and the ecological strides that certain other manufacturers are making before reporting on a real-world scenario in the form of the recent Total Economy Run.

Our test agenda for the month includes a full test of the Volkswagen Golf TSI Highline and fast impressions of the Honda Accord diesel, Peugeot 107, Smart mhd and Renault Sandero. South Africa’s best new car guide and a full complement of motorsport news is also on hand as always.

Cars in Action August 2009

SPORTS CARS IN ACTION
We all grow up dreaming of sports cars and the August issue of Cars in Action, on sale now, keeps those dreams alive with an adrenalin-packed magazine that focuses on this most exciting breed of car.

Read all about the 2011 Lamborghini Murcielago replacement in Fast Forward, before checking out our top ten sports cars of all times, followed by an indepth look at exciting new international players like the Aston Martin One-77, Corvette ZR1, Bugatti Veyron GS and the locally-released Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.

Our main shootout for August takes a more real-world approach to the sports car, as we take three relatively affordable sports cars in the form of a Nissan 370Z, BMW Z4 35i and Audi TTS on a road trip to Dawsons in Mpumalanga.

Our next needlematch pits the new VW Golf GTI against the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane R26 and Subaru Impreza WRX, while our test line-up includes a full test on the VW Scirocco and fast impressions on the Mini Cooper S Convertible and Mercedes-Benz S500.

It’s sports cars galore in CiA August, but we haven’t neglected to also offer you the latest in motoring and motorsport news, columns and long-term updates.

Bakkie & Truck Action August 2009

CHALLENGING THE CHAMP
The Toyota Hilux has a long record of winning our bakkie shootouts, but there are always new challengers to the throne.

Mazda’s BT50 has received a nip and tuck and Tata has put a powerful new engine in its Xenon, which means for us Bakkie & Truck Action folk, it’s time for a fight! But will either topple the king? We pit these three against each other, also throwing in an Isuzu KB and Nissan Navara for good measure.

For those that prefer smaller bakkies, we’ve also done a comparison featuring Nissan’s new high-spec NP200 16-valve, the 1.8-litre Opel Corsa Ute and the Ford Bantam 1.6 XLE. These bakkies all combine surprisingly good performance and comfort for the prices they command, but only one can win…

The August issue is also packed with the very latest in bakkie and truck-industry news, and we’ve also reintroduced the Action & Adventure section for those into off-road biking. This month we take a look at some of the new dirt bikes for 2010.

Cars in Action July 2009

THE POWER EDITION
The July issue of Cars in Action is dedicated to the glory of power and as youd expect, we’ve lined up a glut of vehicles that have no shortage of ponies.

After taking a peek at the fastest cars on earth, our attention shifts to a comparison test between three powerful sports cars available in South Africa. Question is, can Aston Martin’s new 4.7-litre V8 Vantage run with the Audi R8 and BMW M6? For those with real-world budgets, we also compare the two most advanced 1.4-litre cars on the planet as the new 118kW VW Golf TSI takes on the Fiat Bravo 1.4 T-Jet

If you want your big power car coated in the best of British elegance, you’ll love our in-depth feature that takes a look at the Aston Martin Vantage, DB9 and DBS. Next we put Jaguar’s new 202kW XF Diesel S under the spotlight, along with the new XFR and XKR and staying with the Brits, the new 449kW Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed gets the full test treatment.

Our Fast Impressions agenda puts the new Audi A6 2.0T, Opel Corsa 1.6 Sport, Peugeot 308 HDi and Ford Focus TDCi to the test and you’ll also find all your favourite CiA regulars, including the very latest motoring and motorsport news and a sneak preview of the next Jaguar XJR in Fast Forward.
