Armetta takes first win in Chev Lumina as Audi and Rangoni take the second race at Kyalami |
Luca Rangoni in his quattro driven Audi RS4 romped away to a satisfying victory in the final event of the Superstars series. Although the top eight reversed grid formation gave him a slight edge at the start he still had the pace right the way through the race to keep the chasers behind.
Amidst a gathering thunderstorm at Kyalami, race two was declared a wet race as the cloudy skies meant rain was imminent. Rangoni made the best of the rolling start and began to pull away from the back as the faster drivers lost time coming through the field. Rangoni was clearly pushing hard to build a gap as he left the track on two occasions coming through the new kink.
Behind Rangoni though race one winner Fabrizio Armetta fought through the field from eighth to second, having a ding dong battle along the way with the M3 of Christian Montanari. Montanari had the pace to beat Armetta but a mistake let Armetta through and Montanari was never able to take the place back, settling for third.
Gianni Morbidelli placed fourth after a solid drive kept him in touch with the lead chase but he was never fast enough to make a challenge.
The race came to a premature end as the red flag came out as the skies began to open with a severe thunderstorm that would have been to dangerous to drive in, let alone race.
