Franschhoek TT this Weekend
25 Feb 2010
Blue ribbon February Franschhoek classic car weekend includes sprint, concours & more |
If you enjoy fast cars and the allure of classic motoring or you’re simply itching for a truly enjoyable day in the Franschhoek sun, then the Franschhoek Motor Museum at the l’Ormarins wine estate is where you should be this weekend.
That's where the who's who - never mind the what's what in classic motoring will be converging over the weekend to introduce an event set to become a part of local lore when the Franschhoek Time Trial and Concours happens on the estate
The South African alternative to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the TT will run on a gymkhana type course at l’Ormarins and will play host to some of the most spectacular cars ever seen in SA. The day will also see the public debut of some splendid museum exhibits, like the ‘50s Formula 1 Maserati 250F not unlike the cars driven by Fangio and Moss in action for the first time in South Africa among a wide variety of classic race and sports cars.
Expect a broad variety of machinery to strut its stuff – from an early Ford Model T racer through to the most exotic Ferraris, Porsches and the rest weaving their way through the unique corners and chicanes of this exceptional track.
The Time Trial will also play host to some of South Africa’s legends of motorsport with Dakar hero Giniel de Villiers, race and rally hero Sarel van der Merwe and several other racing names past in action and happy to mix with the crowd. Another superb prospect is that four lucky TT spectators will win the ride of their lives as passenger in the Museum’s awesome Enzo Ferrari…
The Concours is meanwhile open to the top classic cars in the country and promises to be a fine and splendid affair that will thrill the aficionado as much as it will entertain the man in the street. There again, several cars never seen before in SA will shed their dust jackets as they emerge from private collections in a display of motoring excellence.
A unique aspect of the Franschhoek TT is the chance to dress up in period attire and enjoy the day as though it was still in the 30’s ‘50s or 1970s. The event will also boast various fine side attractions with various marquees, shows and special guest appearances, while the museum of course will be open– if you have not seen it, what better a time to do so?
Tickets will be sold in advance only and are available through Computicket, although locals can book theirs at the museum office with packages including a VIP tickets, tent hospitality, Friday evening cocktails, the Saturday night braai and meal packages available. Organisers advise the out of town visitors book accommodation early to avoid disappointment.
