DRIVEN - Subaru Legacy GT

5 Feb 2010

Spicy new GT option shoves Subaru Legacy straight into the hot mid-executive superleague
So you're getting on a bit but you still like to drive and this time you're gonna put yourself first. You'd love another GTI, but you're two models beyond it and past your last one and of course, you need something more mature to go with the promotion in the company parking lot.

Your family is growing, too - the sixteen year-old daughter is almost six foot tall and who knows how long your son will get before you're done with this car. You like the idea of a 335i, but you agree with Jeremy - it's a cock's car. And you got a huge fright when you saw the half a bar-plus on the price list before you even get two options in it.

Add an extra hundred grand for the S4 so it's a non starter already and both of those are designed to pack dwarfs in the back, so your beanstalk-spec kids will have no chance. Oh yes - there's C Class and the Lumina SS, but Merc doesn't build anything to tickle your fancy under C63 and you reckon the Beemer is too right wing, so what chance does the Chev have?

All optioned out? Maybe not - take a look at this:

The GT badge is hallowed in the annals of Subaru history and they've just brought it back in a car that should for all intents and purpouses throw a monster Fuji cat amongst the mega-mid exec pigeons.

OK, we said the new Legacy's contemporary styling was a bit gawky, but there's more than a touch of M5 in the spicy new GT's pimped-up look - it's bigger wheels, sportier appendages and far more aggro pose put it straight back into contention. And hey - we're comparing it to a Beemer here, so who can really complain about styling after all?

Packing a good few ponies less than the 335i and S4, GT however compares quite well in terms of torque to shove it into the gap between them and their normally aspirated kin and offer a surprisingly agile option that has all the turbo attractions to match those more expensive rivals on the Reef and packs quite a bit more punch than their lesser siblings at about the same price...
