The RS is a model with more than a passing resemblance to the WRX.
And it’s the ideal stepping stone for those who aspire to the turbo model and want a car which emulates it in look and feel, if not outright performance. Currently there’s a huge perception gap between the Impreza 2.0R and the WRX ,and while the newcomer is identical to the range’s entry-level model in terms of mechanicals, the RS fills that gap by adding not only a large dollop of visual appeal but also enhanced roadholding and handling capabilities thanks to the 17-inch wheels and wider, lower-profile tyres.
But it isn’t just the wheels and 205/50 rubber on 17-inch alloys that make the RS look special: it’s also the Sports kit comprising side sills, boot winglet, front bumper with a more pronounced spoiler and integrated fog lamps, and a deeper rear bumper. Rounding it all off is a single-slat grille with a notable absence of brightwork.
“The new Impreza RS has all the hallmarks of a genuine compact sports sedan, in that it offers well-rounded driver appeal with a look that leaves no doubt as to what its aspirations are,” says Subaru Southern Africa’s brand and marketing manager Grant Bowring. “But that doesn’t mean its a wannabe WRX – rather, we see it as a valid stepping stone for those who are growing up, and want a car which reflects this in terms of safety and practicality as well as the ability to tackle twists and turns with unmatched verve.”
In fact, with the exception of the bonnet scoop, mesh grille, sunroof and finish of the wheels (the style of wheel is the same but a silver look is preferred here rather than the smoked grey of the WRX), the RS is visually identical to its turbocharged stablemate.
