Ferrari’s 599 hybrid concept is set to be shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and some more details about the vehicle have just been released by company boss, Amedeo Felisa.
He first revealed that the test mule 599 hybrid has been running for about a year and has been returning a fuel consumption figure that’s an impressive 25% better than that of the standard 599.
Felisa also mentioned though that the hybrid technology in the 599 concept adds approximately 80kg to the overall weight of the vehicle and that it is unlikely the technology will appear in production models for another five or so years. “The technology is not ready,” noted Felisa.
“The suppliers are not ready. Everything is underdeveloped. There is a lot of work to do. It is not for tomorrow. We haven’t decided when it will be introduced. It will be around 2015, but not before five years.” Felisa further stated that the developers of last year’s KERS system for Formula One have been reassigned to developing more environmentally friendly road car technology.
The fact that the 599 is being used to present hybrid technology for Ferraris does not mean that it will be the first model to receive the technology. According to Felisa, the hybrid technology would be designed in such away that it could fit any Ferrari model, whether it be front or mid-engined and V8 or V12-powered.
