ALTECH GT CHALLENGE
Toby back on Top
In the Altech GT Challenge, Toby Venter was again supreme in Class A, although Vernon Bricknel made a return to the class in his Porsche GT2R, albeit without much luck.

Class B had two new entries, the beautifully turned out BigFoot Express Porsche 997 GT3s of Sun Moodley and German guest driver Lance Arnold, a regular in the Porsche Cup curtain raisers to F1GP's, who drove accordingly, to finish runner up to Venter both times.

The Ferrari contigent was somewhat smaller than in previous years with only 4 cars present, and became smaller still when Jeremy Pougnet suffered a horrific crash in morning warm up, by sliding off at Potter's Pass, barrel rolling the F430, and damaging it beyong repair for the day.

Pougnet thankfully escaped only with suspected cracked ribs, but bravely strapped himself in to the BP Utimate show car to finish both the day's heats. Franco Scribante put in a good day's work to finish second behind Arnold in Class B in heat 1, with Piter Joubert taking the place in heat 2.

In Class C Nicky Dicks and Barry Nel had a good scrap in both races, running in close company throughout, with the Dicks winning both times. The GT4 class ran for the first time in the Altech GT Challenge, with the two Tubular Exa Motorgroup entries of Paulo da Cunha and Howard Blake running in Class C, boosting the numbers but not doing much else this time around.

INVESTECH FORMULA FORD
Merton takes the Lion’s Share
In the inaugural Midas Formula Ford race for Duratec engined chassis, Matthew Merton (Matsam Supplies Mygale) overcame a multitude of teething problems that had beset the entire field, from faulty clutches which needed a last minute replacement on Thursday, to a lack of set up time, to score a memorable double for the day.

He withstood enormous pressure both times, from Robert Wolk (Midas Sport Mygale) and Steve Morris( Van Diemen) in heat 1, and then Morris again in heat 2 who was relentless in his attempts to share the spoils.

Another noteworthy performance came from Nicholas van Weely (Anglorand Van Diemen) who started from the back of the field both times, after failing failing to set a time in qualifying on Saturday morning. The current champion finished third in both races after clawing his way through the field. Robert Wolk managed a second and a fourth in the two races, while Jayde Kruger (FirstFreight/Motul Mygale) retired both times with a persistent misfire.

James Temple (GWM Mygale) again showed a lot of promise with a 4th place in heat 1, although he too did not finish heat 2. In the Midas Formula Ford Zetec class, Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale) scored an easy double, with Ian Schofield and Alan Meyer locked in combat behind him both times. Although there is clearly a lot of work to do on the set up and reliabilty of the Duratecs, Saturday's two races augur well for what promises to be a great season ahead.
