Audi has just announced plans to introduce a new bi-turbo diesel engine in its A6, A6 Allroad and A7 Sportback models.
The three-litre engine will push out 230kW and 650Nm, which will be sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox. This will allow the A6 sedan to sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds, where as the A6 Avant and A7 will take 5.3. All of these models will go onto a top speed of 250km/h, electronically-limited of course.
While it’s definitely got some power, fuel economy hasn’t been ignored either thanks to a stop-start system and an innovative thermal management system that allows the coolant and oil temperatures to quickly be brought up to full operating temperature. This held the engine to achieve a fuel consumption figure of 6.4l/100km and CO2 emissions of 169g/km.
Models fitted with this engine will come with a rather unusual feature as well, a sound actuator that will transform the typical diesel noise into a sonorous roar that will make it sound closer to a high-performance petrol engine. We’ll have to wait and see how well that works.
