The new BMW 1 Series was only recently launched here in South Africa and BMW is already hard at work expanding the range. It’s got several new models waiting to join the range including the 125i, 125d and 116d EfficientDynamics.
We start off with the 125i, which gives the new 1 Series a far more powerful engine. It’s a two-litre TwinPower Turbo engine that develops 160kW and 310Nm This gets the hatch from 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 245km/h. It will use between 6.4 and 6.6 litres of fuel per 100km with CO2 emissions sitting at between 149 and 154g/km.
The 125d uses a two-litre engine as well, with an identical 160kW, but as you would expect the torque is much higher than its petrol counterpart, 450Nm to be precise. It’s a tenth of a second slower to 100km/h compared to the 125i and maxes out at 240. However, its fuel consumption sits a 4,9l/100km and CO2 emissions are between 126 and 129g/km.
Finally we get to the 116d EfficientDynamics, which has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine under the bonnet. This little diesel develops 85kW and 260Nm, sending its power through a six-speed manual transmission. It gets the 116d from 0-100km/h in 10.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 195km/h. BMW has fitted it with low-resistance tyres and a new aerodynamic kit to reduce drag, helping it to use just 3.8-litres of diesel per 100km, with CO2 emissions sitting at 99g/km.
Besides the new models, BMW has also revealed the new M Sport Package for the 1 Series, which includes a more aggressive body kit, sportier suspension, a reduced ride height and 17 or 18-inch allow wheels.
There are changes inside as well, including fabric/Alcantara seats, aluminium hexagon trim, aluminium doorsills and a few M badges dotted around the cabin.
