DRIVEN - Range Rover Sport

31 Jan 2012

A new Range Rover has joined the line-up, taking the top spot in the range, say hello to the Sport Autobiography
After the sales success of the new Range Rover Evoque, the British firm has decided that it's about time the public remembers other Range Rover products, namely the Sport. So, we headed down to the twisting mountain passes of the Cape to try out the latest Range Rover Model to his our market, the Sport Autobiography.

Now, this isn't a special, limited-edition version of the Sport, but rather a model that offers a greater level of customisation for the clients. There are a few other changes over the standard Sport as well, things like a unique front grille, different exhaust pipes and bespoke 20-inch alloy wheels.

All of these tweaks help to make it stand out from regular Sport models but what they don't change is the overall styling vine from the car itself. This is and always has been the ultimate gangsta-mobile, it's imposing, in your face and remarkably stylish all at the same time.

Open the door and you'll be greeted by an extremely luxurious cabin. The dashboard is covered in the finest quality leather, along with the seats. There's a real sense that this interior has been crafted, rather than simply assembled in the factory.

Naturally there is plenty of space inside, plus tonnes of features that make this an ideal family car. Chuck the kids in the back on a long drive and they will keep themselves entertained thanks to the rear entertainment system that features TV screens in the headrests of the front seats and wireless headphones.

So, the styling and interior are just what you'd expect from a Range Rover, but what about under the bonnet. The range includes a 180kW, 600Nm TDV6 diesel engine but most importantly, it still features the five-litre supercharged petrol motor, which pushes out 375kW and 625Nm. There's plenty of power available from any and it’s got a great soundtrack, in fact, it almost sounds like a slightly muted AMG.

This is by no means a small car, but thanks to that beast under the bonnet, it gets from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds before reaching its top speed of 225. It's quick, never forget that. Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission that features paddle override, for sportier experience.
