SEFAC hosted the annual Ferrari day at Kyalami with more than 150 modern and classic Ferrari’s meeting and enjoying a track day. With exciting racing, open air displays and a Forza Racing Ferrari burning up a set of Pirelli tyres in a smoking display of power and control, a lucky few even enjoyed blistering laps around the track ushered in selected Ferrari’s.
SEFAC, the Southern Equatorial Ferrari Automobili Club was formed in 1967, making it one of the oldest Ferrari clubs in the world. The club gathers annually to enjoy a day of fun in the sun, also offering the public an opportunity to see so many different models of Ferraris, and a few classics that one won’t even see on the road. The cars on display included the latest Ferrari California, the 612 Scaglietti, F430 and classics like the Dino 246 GT, F40 and Berlinetta Boxer.
The first Ferrari to arrive in South Africa was imported in 1958 by Gigi Lupini. This, a bright yellow 250 California was one of only 3 right hand drive versions built from of a limited production of 20 units in total. In that same year Gigi brought in the second Ferrari via Angola, the 1952 Monaco GP winning 225 S Barchetta. This competition car was driven by former spitfire fighter pilot trainer Horse Boyden who competed locally under the Scuderia Lupini banner in the 9 hour and other local GP’s, in a day when the South African public still got to see the equivalent of today’s Formula 1 GP’s on home soil.
The SEFAC day was sponsored by Pirelli Tyre, Forza Racing, Sela Brokers, Shell, Acer, British Airways, Ferrari Store, Khomanani Mersey Sound, Ray Ban, Rosso Sport Auto, Viglietti Motors and Vodacom.
