Golf GTI celebrates 35 years

16 Feb 2012

VW celebrated the 35th anniversary of the iconic Golf GTI with the introduction of special edition Golf GTI Edition 35.
The special edition Golf GTI Edition 35 pays homage to success of this icon and its legendary status in the last three decades. Edition 35 is destined to be a collector’s item in South Africa from day one.

With 173kW of power, Edition 35 outputs 18kW more than the standard 2.0 TSI Golf GTI at 155kW. Similar to the current generation Golf GTI, it is front-wheel drive that is well supported by XDS electronic differential lock.

Its maximum torque of 300Nm that is available between 2200 to 5500rpm, allows it to reach a top speed of 247km/h. The 100km/h mark is achieved in just 6.6 seconds. Golf GTI Edition 35 is available with standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed DSG.

With a manual gearbox, Golf GTI Edition 35 offers a respectable combined fuel consumption of 8.1l/100km and CO2 emissions of 189 g/km. In the DSG version, these two values are improved to 8.0 l/100 km and 185 g/km CO2.

Visually, the Golf GTI Edition 35 can be recognised by its new bumper design in front with bi-xenon headlights plus cornering and LED daytime running lights.

For Golf GTI Edition 35, Volkswagen has developed a new 18-inch “Watkins Glen” alloy wheels. The alloy wheels are named after a US racetrack in the state of New York. The 225/40 R18 tyres are fitted to Sterling Silver alloy wheels.

The interior was customised too. New GTI ingredients here are the gear shift grip in the classic golf ball look of the first generation GTI, new decorative strips in the cockpit area and the door trim panels (“Black Array” type), special door sill plates with worked-in “35” logo and safety belts with red stripes.

Like all GTIs, the Edition 35 is equipped with a sport chassis. Working in front is the familiar MacPherson suspension with helical springs and telescoping dampers. At the rear, an innovative multi-link suspension ensures that the ESP system seldom needs to be activated. The Volkswagen’s four disc brakes are also extremely durable and strong.
