Hot Mercedes S-Class Coming

10 Mar 2010

Mercedes-Benz has released more pictures of its hot new concept S63 AMG, decked out in retro livery

More pictures of Mercedes-Benz’s latest concept, the retro S63 AMG, have been released, and the car will be used as a showcase for the German marque’s new 5.5-litre V8 motor. The twin-turbo engine will first go into use in the revised S63 AMG.

This concept is stripped out and clothed in the stickers of the 1971 300SEL AMG racing car, which was powered by a 6.8-litre AMG engine. The car includes a number of features that will make appearances on the revised S63 AMG, some of which are the wider wheel arches and sills.

The fact that the 5.5-litre twin-turbo engine replaces a larger-displacement 6.2-litre mill means nothing, as the new engine produces both more power and more torque than its predecessor, all while being more fuel efficient too. 400kW is on offer in the new motor at 5500rpm, while 800Nm is available between 2000 and 4500rpm.

Both of these outputs are notably more than the 386kW and 629Nm outputs of the current engine. The new outputs are also available from lower down in the rev band, another plus point in its favour. Furthermore, a 420kW 900Nm version will be available as part of a performance package for the S63 AMG.

The engine will be married to Mercedes’ MCT 7-speed transmission, also found in the E63 AMG.
