The team had struggled to get on top of the radical F2012 during the first three days but Alonso rose to the top of the timesheets early on in day four and was never displaced to end up a pleasing seven tenths clear of the day four field. That included Lewis Hamilton's McLaren and world champion Sebastian Vettel in the new Red Bull, both of whom were also behind young gun Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso. Romain Grosjean's Thursday time was good enough to keep him second among the 2012 cars overall in the new Lotus while Vergne finished his second day for Toro Rosso nine thousandths quicker than Vettel with Hamilton fourth in McLaren's MP4-27 and Grosjean fifth on the day.
