McLaren-Mercedes became one of the first F1 teams to reveal its 2012 contender. The new MP4-27 was shown off at the McLaren Technology Centre and has been described by the team as the natural evolution of the car that won six races last year.
Each of the car’s main systems have received an overhaul and as you can see from the pictures, it features a rather unsightly nose. Still, performance is more important than beauty so if it works, who are we to complain.
As you would expect, McLaren is keeping a lot of secrets about the new car but the team did say that the car features tightly waisted rear bodywork to improve the airflow to the rear, which houses a modified cooling system that re-directs the gearbox oil-cooler.
The car is set to hit the track for the first time at an aerodynamic test this weekend, where the car will be piloted by youngster Oliver Turvey, before Jenson Button gets his turn behind the wheel at the first F1 test at Jerez.
