Less than two months ago, at the Detroit Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz gave its new SL-Class its world premiere and now the AMG model has been launched. The SL63 AMG was shown off in Barcelona, along with the 2012 Mercedes F1 car.
Its long bonnet houses a monster of an engine, one that we have had a fair amount of experience with in the likes of the CLS63 and the E63. It’s the M157 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine and in the SL it delivers a little more power than in the CLS or the E-Class. In those cars it produced 386kW, but here in the SL you’ll have 394kW on tap, which can be increased to 410kW with the Performance pack.
In addition to this, thanks to its all-aluminium bodyshell and various magnesium components, it weighs 11-kg less than the previous AMG SL. This means that it can get from 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds, 4.2 if you get the Performance pack, while fuel consumption is 30% less than the previous generation.
Styling-wise it looks very similar to the regular model with a few touches to make it more aggressive. The front end gets a different bumper with larger air intakes and daytime running LED lights inside and the front grille features a new split-wing design. At the back you’ll find a revised bumper with a diffuser and four trapezoidal exhausts.
