The Audi R8 is a fantastic everyday supercar but it’s been around for quite some time now and Audi is starting to work on its replacement. We’ve known this for some time now but today we can bring you some more details about the next R8, which is expected to launch in 2014. From what we hear, the next R8 is being developed alongside the Lamborghini Gallardo replacement and is codenamed AU724. Both of these cars are expected to have an advanced carbon fibre and aluminium monocoque, which will weigh in at 198kg. This should allow the new model to weigh at least 60kg less than the current model, with Audi setting its sights on the car weighing 1500kg.
The engines are expected to remain relatively unchanged with minor upgrades focused on improving performance and efficiency. This should mean that the power from the entry-level 4.2-litre V8 is boosted up to 336kW, with the 5.2-litre V10 churning out 410kW.
There are already rumours about the GT version that could come out two years after the standard model is launched in 2016, with 432kW. Time will tell. If waiting until 2014 is too much for you, then don’t worry because the facelifted R8 is due to be launched in August.
