Volvo wants the success of the new S60 to match that of the original one, a car that sold more than a million units.
The new S60, described by Volvo design boss Peter Horbury as a “brakes off” car, has allowed him to push the envelope in terms of design, and what’s more, it’s allowed him to incorporate a more Swedish look into the product.
Volvo plans to sell 90 000 units in the car’s first year on sale, but they actually hope that this figure will increase this to 110 000, which would match the lifetime best of the original S60. Volvo has put a lot of effort into developing the new S60’s chassis and suspension, and the manufacturer says that the S60 will be “the most dynamic car we’ve ever presented.”
The S60 is based on an extended Ford Mondeo platform, but obviously has some revisions specific to the S60. Dynamic and comfort are the two variants the car will be offered in, the two different variants making use of different dampers and changes to the subframes.
The steering is faster than the old S60’s, while the suspension has been tuned to provide a firmer, sharper driving experience with stiffer bushes and mountings in the subframes and dampers.
