Official M Performance details

27 Jan 2012

BMW has finally revealed some official details about the M550d xDrive and X5/X6 M50d models, due out at Geneva
At long last BMW has revealed some official specs about upcoming models that will form part of the M Performance range. The four models that have been revealed include the M550d xDrive sedan and touring and then an M50d version of the X5 and X6.

All of these models will be fitted with a new three-litre six-cylinder tri-turbo diesel engine that pushes out 280kW and a very healthy 740Nm. BMW claims that because this engine has three-turbos working together, throttle response should be instantaneous.

The German firm also released some 0-100 figures, which are as follows. The M550d xDrive Sedan will crack 100 in 4.7 seconds, while the touring version is 0.2 seconds slower. The X5 M50D will take 5.4 seconds, while the X6 will do it in 5.3 seconds, so these models might have a diesel engine but they certainly aren’t slow.

Other features of these cars include an eight-speed automatic gearbox, xDrive all-wheel drive, start-stop and M-tuned springs and dampers. They’ll receive some styling treatment as well like M performance body kits, trapezoidal exhaust pipes. 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels and numerous M badges around the car.

These models should make their official public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, before going on sale in Germany soon after. The M550d should be on sale by mid-May, with the X5 and X6 hitting German showrooms a month later.
