PREVIEW - Zwartkops Historics

29 Jul 2011

A day of legends at Zwartkops as the Midas Historic Tour brings great champions and cars of the past back into action
Saturday sees the Midas Historic Tour visiting Zwartkops with a star-studded field of cars and drivers to stir up the emotions.

True to that legend status, Ben Morgenrood takes on the might of the Legends Production Cars with the NASCAR Ford Galaxie. Ben will however have to content with no less than Ian Scheckter in the SP Racing Plymouth Fury and the du Toit Brothers Mark du Toit in the 1960 winning Daytona 500 Chev Biscayne replica and brother Jonathan du Toit in the Smokey lookalike Yunick Chevelle. Dawie Olivier will back up these chargers in the now revised Studebaker Golden Hawk.

Don't expect these big bangers to have it all their own way as former Production Car star Trevor Tuck has given notice that his specially prepared Alfa Guilia is quite capable of taking on the big V8’s as is Keith Hinckley in the Thunderbolt Fairlane also a hopeful Alan Poulter will make his return in the silver Volvo which on occasion has taken on the American saloons.

The giants will also make themselves felt in the Auto-Mate Pre-1974 Trans-Am Challenge, with Willie Hepburn driving the Sonoco Donohue recreation Camaro having his old nemesis Morgenrood return to the fray in his Mustang. They will be challenged by Richard Pinnard in the Mercury Cougar, and Mark du Toit in the Trans Africa Racing Chev Camaro, (brother Jonatha’s Camaro No.13) Car no.12 should also be on the track with another well known South African National ace driver. The Trans-Am giants will also be the under 2.5 liter classes to take on the V8’s. Look out for Theo van Vuuren’s 2002 BMW and Colin Ellison’s Alfa GT which has also shown it can win overall.

The Execuline International Sports Racing Prototypes field will be boosted by Carel Pienaar’s magnificent Lola T70 MK 3B Coupe. This green beauty will be in the front of the grid to take on Garth Waberski similar Lola, Clare Vale's Porsche 917 and Jonathan du Toit’s Chevron B8, and Barry Scott’s Chevron B19.

Another very special interesting addition to the grid will be the car that won the last South African Sports Car Championship – the late Jack Holmes Ecosse MKII. This car which has since 1968 been re-bodied and won a series of championships in Zimbabwe before returning to South Africa, it will be driven by another S.A. National ace Lee Thompson. The ISP Series is also complemented with a magnificent array of Le Mans RSR’s Porsches headed by Frans Pretorius, John Greve, Dave Fourie, Dawie Theron and Peter Jenkins.

The Execuline Le Mans Sports & GT Cars Pre-1966/68 has a magnificent line up of cars and drivers. The Le Mans Ford GT 40 brigade will include Franco, Lee and Dino Scribante, Ross Lazarus, Craig Shorter, Oliver Dalais… all out to take on Mark du Toit ice cream special T70 Spyder. In very close company will be the class B cars – Peter Lindenberg will debut a very special racing Shelby Daytona Coupe. To take on Jonathan du Toit in the red Daytona and Frank Klinkert in the “World Fastest Racing Cobra”, all being charged down hard by young Thomas Falkiner in the delectable Ford Mustang which finished second overall at Kyalami in May.
