The Toyota 86 has been coming for what seems like ages and now it’s finally on our roads. The hype around the car has been incredible; a small, rear-wheel drive coupe that promises big thrills for a reasonable price. Now it’s here but the problem with things that get so hyped up is that it is easy for them to let you down, but does the 86 live up to it all or not?
Personally I think it is a good-looking machine. It’s small and aggressive, although some people have said it looks more kit car or a toy car. Styling is always subjective but I quite like it, especially at the rear where you’ve got those two rather sizeable exhausts ports. It isn’t perfect, though, and personally I think it could do with a nice big wing on the back, which hopefully its sister car, the Subaru BRZ, will supply when they eventually stick an STI badge on it, which we are all hoping they do.
Inside, well that is a bit of a let down. In fact, it is a big let down. After that rather stunning exterior, I was hoping that my first step into the cabin I’d be greeted by an atmosphere that relates to the edgy outside look. The dashboard looks horrible in my opinion, a boring, dull slab that dominates the dash in front of the passenger seat. Where’s the style? The rest looks better, including those fantastic seats but I really think Toyota could’ve done a better job in the cabin.
Still, the quality is good and the spec list on this high-end model is impressive. You get ABS, VSC, dual airbags, curtain airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric windows and mirrors, an MP3 player with a USB slot, a trip computer and a pair of small rear seats for… I don’t know, a few packets of biltong.
