Subaru confirms Groenewald, Lotus joins & cool new format for Bridgestone Production Cars |
The Bridgestone Production Car scene is abuzz with action again. It seems that Cars in Action Online's story last year on SP Racing running a Lotus in the series was not unfounded after all. It transpires that the SP Racing that's set to take over Subaru team will also field an Exige for another V8 refugee Richard Pinard.
It's its presence in Production Cars is however being questioned in some quarters, with purists suffeating the car should rather compete in SA's new GT4 series...
In another development, regulations for February 20's Kyalami season opener have revealed a unique and interesting new three-race format for the Bridgestone series. Qualifying will determine the grid for race 1 with the top 6 finishers reversed for the race 2 grid.
Race 2 happens within 10 minutes of the finish of race 1, with limited servicing. Not finishing race 1 will inevitably see drivers missing race 2 - and hopefully bring better driver discipline...
The third race grid grid will be determined by the drivers' second fastest lap from qualifying. All three races will be off rolling starts (which will eliminate any AWD advantage) with race 1 and 2 are six-lap races with race 3 being 10 laps.
And finally, following our breaking the news last week, Subaru South Africa has confirmed that triple WesBank champion Hennie Groenewald will be joining the series alongside Dawie Olivier, who misses the first races as he recuperates from back surgery.
Carel Pienaar of SP Racing is tasked with operating and managing the Subaru Impreza STI campaign. “I’m very excited about the potential of the Impreza STI," Pienaar said. "We’re have a massive amount of potential to unlock”.
"I'm looking forward to the change," Groenewald admitted at the weekend's Kilarney historic races. "You know how good the Subaru is - we just have to make the best of the weight penalty rules."
