NEW - Subaru Outback 3.6R

7 Feb 2010

Subaru Southern Africa’s Outback luxury XUV gets a range-topping model this month.

A single word is needed to sum up the Outback 3.6R – freedom: the freedom to seek out adventures in comfort and style with the Outback’s trademark practicality and spaciousness. With plentiful performance it has the ability to go anywhere with confidence, and cover ground in a way which those accustomed to the finer things in life will appreciate.

Variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves allows the power delivery to be optimised across a broad operating range while optimizing fuel efficiency – no surprise then that it complies with EURO4 emission regulations.

Thinner cylinder liners have increased the bore diameter while the crankshaft stroke stretches from 80mm to 91mm to achieve the 3630cc displacement. Exhaust and inlet valves are bigger compared to the previous 3-litre, with intake ports, the exhaust system and injector rates adjusted to suit.

On the inside, the flagship of the Outback range stands out thanks to wood-grain finish on the doors and dash, contrasting tastefully with the metal-look facing of the centre console. While luxury and comfort are integral to the Outback lifestyle, the wagon layout allows for large loads to be carried with the rear seats followed. To this end the ‘R’ version also gets self-levelling rear suspension, while like its 2.5-litre understudy it boasts an automatic tailgate unlocking feature, and standard roof rails for carrying the accessories which will inevitably form part of the Outback lifestyle.

Like every other Subaru the new Outback 3.6R is sold with a 3-year/100 000km warranty, a 3-year/63 000km maintenance plan which can be extended to five years or 200 000km, making it a logical choice for buyers who wish to not only enjoy the driving experience, but the ownership experience too.
