McMurray Wins Dramatic Daytona
14 Feb 2010
McMurray and Eanahart Ganassi Racing take their first Daytona wins after a six hour event |
Eanahart Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray took his maiden win at the Daytona 500 in spectacular fashion.
This is also a first for his team with McMurray leading only the last two laps after racing his way to the front in the closing stages of the night, taking nearly six hours to complete.
The reason for the delay was due to a hole that had formed in on the track. After the track was mended it formed again later in the race.
When the race finally got underway, McMurray started the final sprint from the front row alongside race leader Kevin Harvick and was looking strong against Harvick.
In what was the second attempt at a green-white-chequered finish, McMurray drove his Chevy past that of Harvick on the outside thanks to a big push from Roush Fenway's Greg Biffle, and then held off a charging Dale Earnahrdt Jr to claim the top prize.
Earnhardt aggressively tried to take McMurray but fell just short of the Daytona 500 win.
Biffle managed to clean up the last podium place just ahead of Bowyer, while Harvick, who was looking weel placed for the win after leading the most laps and up front for the restart, lost the draft after McMurray passed him finished seventh.
The Reigning Sprint Cup champion of Jimmie Johnson did not have a good race, retiring with a broken rear axle.
Winner of the second Duel qualifier Kasey Kahne, was involved in an incident on the first attempt to a green-white-chequered finish and finished 30th.
